Sideline Behaviour Initiatives - GoodSports and Positive Vibes Only

If you would like support or advice to promote Good Sports, or want to enquire about funding for sideline behavior projects, or if you would like to run a Positive Vibes Only campaign at your Centre, please contact Amanda Dyason (WBOP Participation Lead) or Aimee Te Whata (WBOP Participation Activator).

Be a good sport! Netball New Zealand (NNZ) and all five netball Zones, promote the Good Sports philosophy.

Many issues in youth sport stem from adult involvement, including poor side-line behaviour and burnout - and they can hinder success on and off the netball court. To give children and young people the best chance of developing a lifelong love of sport, Good Sports focuses on raising adults’ awareness about their behaviours and, if necessary, promoting a positive shift in that behaviour. Good Sports has been developed in partnership with Aktive and Sport New Zealand, and funded by New Zealand Community Trust and AUT.

WBOP Zone is here to support Netball Centres to promote Good Sports and advocate for positive sideline behavior. To get the ball rolling in 2024, we ran a workshop session on this topic at at our recent Centre Connect after the WBOP Zone AGM in March.

Check out all of the FREE GoodSports resources available on the NNZ Website - video clips, social media tiles, posters that can be printed and displayed in your Centre pavillion, and more.

Plus, WBOP Zone has funding available to provide vests for Centre volunteers and courtside signboards of Good Sports posters to a limited number of Centres in 2024.

Our netball community might also have seen another awesome sideline behavior initiative from Sport Waikato - Positive Vibes Only. Piloted by Sport Waikato and Hamilton City Netball Centre at the Upper North Island Secondary School Netball Champs in 2023, Positive Vibes Only is a region-wide positive behaviour campaign across multiple codes.

Sport Waikato’s Sport Development Manager Amigene Metcalfe (also former WBOP Magic Head Coach) says the rangatahi (teenagers) in our communities tell us that the adults in their lives significantly influence their experiences in physical activity and sport. “We hope that, through the Positive Vibes Only campaign, we can raise awareness of how adults can help make sport a more enjoyable experience for everyone”. The  Waikato Sport Collective – Northern Districts Cricket Association, WaiBOP Football Federation, Waikato Rugby, Waikato Touch Association, Hamilton City Netball Centre, Netball Waikato Bay of Plenty Zone, Waikato Hockey Association and the Waikato Volleyball Association - will roll out the campaign across various competitions and tournaments.
