One of the many exciting NetballSmart workshops we have been delivering across the zone is Umpires Are Athletes, delivered by our NetballSmart Officer, Sam Winders. The session focused on recognising the physical demands of umpiring and supporting umpires in developing their athleticism – just like players do.
Held at both the Netball Rotorua and Hamilton City Netball Centres in April, the workshops invited umpires and umpire coaches to explore the value of preparation, fitness, and movement quality. Discussions included how strength and conditioning can improve decision-making, reduce injury risk, and help umpires move more efficiently on court.
With a passion for building athleticism, we brought a strong focus on practical tools and small, sustainable changes that can make a big difference to performance. The session encouraged umpires to see themselves as athletes and to use NetballSmart resources to support their role.
A big ngā mihi goes to the umpires and umpire coaches who took part, contributing to open, insightful conversations and embracing a fresh perspective on their own performance.
