Whakatāne Centre Visit

Community, Growth, and Game-Day Buzz: A Morning at Whakatāne Netball Centre

There is a unique kind of magic that exists in grassroots sports, and our recent morning spent at the Whakatāne Netball Centre was a beautiful reminder of exactly why these community hubs are so vital.

From the moment we arrived, the warmth of the Eastern Bay of Plenty was on full display. We were greeted with genuine, friendly smiles from a team whose sole mission for the morning seemed to be making us feel completely at home. It set the tone for an incredible visit.

While the action on the courts was fast-paced and thrilling, the true highlight of our visit was getting a behind-the-scenes look at how the Whakatāne Netball Centre runs its umpire programme.

Umpiring can often be a daunting task for those who are starting out their journey, but here, the approach is rooted entirely in encouragement and growth. Throughout the morning, it became abundantly clear that the local volunteers are deeply invested in developing their match officials. For anyone putting their hand up to learn, the support system in place is nothing short of exceptional.

We had the privilege of observing some truly stellar umpire coaching taking place on the sidelines. The quality of the mentorship was outstanding—constructive, encouraging, and delivered with a level of expertise that ensures these officials are set up for success. It was clear that there wasn't just a focus on enforcing rules, but also on building confidence, understanding positioning, and managing the game with a positive attitude.

Throughtout our visit, we could practically feel the energy in the air. A vibrant buzz of excitement rippled across the courts, backed by a profound sense of community support. Parents, players, and spectators weren’t just cheering for goals; they were actively supporting the development happening on the sidelines.

It takes a village to run a successful sports centre, and Whakatāne’s village is thriving.
