It was an awesome opportunity to recently connect with the vibrant community at the Matamata Netball Centre and get a firsthand look at the fantastic programme they have in place to support their umpires. The dedication to nurturing the next generation of officials was evident the moment we arrived, showcasing a thriving local sports culture that Matamata should be incredibly proud of.
The centre's umpires-in-training were impossible to miss, standing out on the courts in their beautiful pink shirts. What made these uniforms even more special was the powerful slogan on the back: "Be Kind." It served as a wonderful, highly visible reminder to players, coaches, and spectators alike about the mutual respect that sits at the heart of grassroots sport.
The structure of the development programme ensures these young officials are set up for success at every turn. Before heading out for their rounds, the umpires had a dedicated opportunity to ask questions and steady their nerves. Once off the court, they gathered for an interactive rule discussion to gain clarity on specific scenarios. The level of engagement from these young umpires was fantastic to see; they were all incredibly eager to learn and improve their craft.
As the evening progressed into the later rounds, the umpires were well supported on the sidelines with high-quality, practical coaching. Watching the mentor team at work was awesome, as they provided real-time feedback with patience and expertise.
The team of volunteers has truly created a warm and welcoming environment at the centre. The sense of community spirit and camaraderie within the umpiring space is a testament to their hard work. Well done to everyone involved in making the day a success—you are doing an amazing job, and we deeply appreciate everything you do for your centre!
