North Harbour Junior Tour (NHJT)

The 2018 Tour has been cancelled due to a clash of dates at the venues used. Planning is already underway for the 2019 Tour.  Watch this space.

The North Harbour Junior Tour is the pre-eminent NZ Schools Cycling event for young riders.  Packed into one weekend riders get to experience two road races*, a time trial and a criterium race.

The aim of the Tour is to provide junior riders with a safe environment to experience and develop road racing skills on courses that are challenging but with distances that are not daunting to those new to the sport.

The four stages, two held at Kumeu and two at QBE (North Harbour) Stadium, provide introductory level racing for riders who can compete in any/all stages for their age group.

The Stage 2 road race is also part of the Schools Points Series run by Counties Manukau Cycling every year.  It’s a big event for intermediate and secondary school riders and we are expecting 350-400 riders across age groups of 11– 19 years old representing schools from all over the North Island including Whangarei, Hamilton, Taupo, Hawkes Bay and down to Wellington.

As well as individual winners for each age group, we have a schools competition which is fiercely contested.

* Year 7/8 riders race a single road race (Stage 2)

Who Can Enter?

Rider eligibility

Riders must have been enrolled at school as at 31st December

Age Groups

Your age group is determined by your age on 31st December

Age groups include:

  • Under 19 male
  • Under 19 female
  • Under 17 male
  • Under 17 female
  • Under 15 male
  • Under 15 female
  • Year 7 & 8 male
  • Year 7 & 8 female

Organisers reserve the right to split the above groups to ensure safe riding if entry numbers are particularly large.

 Licence

This year all riders will be licensed.  This can be either a full CNZ "Youth Licence" (which senior / regular competitors will already have), or, a CNZ "Schools Licence".

To race under a Schools Licence, complete the entry form and tell us which school you will race for.

The Schools Licence is very straightforward and starts with each participating School "affiliating" with NZSCA (Cycling New Zealand Schools).  NHCC will liaise with Schools.  Each school submits the names of their riders who then receive their licences.

Riders pay $3 per event covered under the Schools Licensing programme.  This fee is included within the NHJT event fee.

Best efforts re timing

We use the services of a commercial time-keeper to record race times.  In particularly difficult weather conditions, or though unplanned circumstances, it may happen that a rider's time does not get correctly recorded.  Race Officials will endeavour to fairly place the rider and award points on a best efforts basis only.

Cycling regulations

In general terms we follow the cycling code for NZ Schools set down by Cycling New Zealand

BIKE

  1. Standard drop handlebars must be used  - NO Aerobars allowed
  2. Wheels must have a minimum of 16 spokes. Composite (carbon) hubs are allowed, but NO composite materials in spokes or wheel rims.
  3. Competitors must use the same bike for all 4 stages. In the event of mechanical issues, the Chief Commissar and Race Manager must be advised of a change of bike. The replacement bike must be then used for the balance of the Tour.
  4. Roll Outs as per NZ Schools Cycling rules

RIDER

  1. Helmets must be worn and be compliant with NZ Safety Standards.  Aero Helmets will be checked for proof of compliance (what does this mean – who does it)
  2. Under no circumstances will earphones be worn.
  3. Race number placement.  Race officials and finish line judges need to be able to read your numbers at all times during your races.   For ALL stages (including ITT) – 1 number on the left flank rotated so that it can be easily read when the rider has their hands on the handle bars; the second number on the lower centre back.

Q and A’s

Qu.  What do I need to do to get a Schools Licence?

Ans. Simply complete the entry form and indicate which school you belong to.  NHCC will liaise with schools to ensure they are affiliated with Cycling New Zealand Schools.

Qu.  What about the weather?  Is the racing on?

Ans. As race days approach we often get asked what the weather is going to do.  Our response is always the same….”we don’t know what the weather is going to do (this is Auckland after all), AND cycling is an all weather (within reason) sport, BUT Race Management will monitor the weather at all times before and during racing from a health and safety perspective.

Qu.  I’m only riding in one stage – is the price the same?

Ans. The price is the same whether you ride one stage or four.  From an organisational point of view we have to plan on the basis that riders will compete in all four stages and incur the associated costs.
