This month we hear from Eddie Perry. Eddie is a member of our U16 Maroon Boys team and Romsini Prems team, and has recently added U16 World Champs to his list of achievements after representing New Zealand in Zagreb, Croatia. Learn more about Eddie below...
How long have you been playing water polo?
I started playing in year 7 so around 4 years now.
What made you take up the sport?
My friend decided to try waterpolo and invited me to give it a go with him, loved it ever since.
What do you think is the most challenging part of the sport?
Setbacks are always hard, whether it is not making a team you desire or being injured. What is important is what you do next and how you respond. The mental part of the game is just as important as the physical part.
What is the highlight of your playing career so far?
Being named Vice Captain of NZ U16 and getting player of the match against Romania at U16 World Champs
What would your advice be to younger players who have just started or looking to push themselves to the next level?
I would say that one of the most important things is to have fun and stay competitive at the same time. Seek feedback from all coaches at all levels, and genuinely listen and try to implement it.
You were a member of the New Zealand U16 team at the World Championships in Zagreb, Croatia. What was the experience like, and what was your favourite part of the trip?
The experience was unreal. It’s a completely different atmosphere over there and the skill level is raised through the roof, very fast paced. My favourite part would have to be the training camp in Montenegro before Worlds. The pool where we trained and scrimmaged was amazing and the total vibe was great.
Do you have a Water Polo ‘idol’ you look up to? Who is this and why?
Sergi Cabanas because I met him at a waterpolo camp in Spain. Thought he was cool ever since.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years time in terms of Water Polo?
Playing professional waterpolo internationally in Europe or US.
