North Shore Tigers Announce Trans-Tasman Partnership with Westmeadows Football Club

In a move set to bolster the growth of Australian Rules Football on both sides of the Tasman, the North Shore Tigers, reigning champions of the Auckland AFL, have announced an exciting partnership with Melbourne-based EDFL Club, Westmeadows Football Club. This strategic collaboration marks a significant step forward for both clubs, aiming to not only enhance player development but also foster cultural exchange and deepen the connection between the two nations through the shared passion for footy.

"We are excited to continue to grow our partnership clubs in Australia. We think this is vital to grow the game in NZ, and continue to enhance our players skillset" remarked Justin Gauci, Coach and President of North Shore Tigers, expressing enthusiasm about the collaboration. "We don't want to rest on our on-field success of the 2020 - 2023 AAFL Men's Premierships and our first Women's Premiership in 2023. So we want to look for ways for our players to continue to improve, and we think it makes sense to help find clubs to settle into playing in Australia".

Gauci's sentiment was echoed by Will Kosteas, President of Westmeadows Football Club, who hailed the partnership as a fantastic initiative. "This is a fantastic initiative by Justin and the North Shore Tigers. As a club, we are always looking to help grow the game, and whatever way we can help grow it internationally in NZ with the Tigers, we want to support that."

The collaboration between the North Shore Tigers and Westmeadows Football Club aims to provide players with invaluable opportunities to experience the unique and highly competitive footy culture in Melbourne, widely regarded as the heartland of Australian Rules Football.

"There is no place that lives and breathes footy more than Melbourne, so it makes sense to find some clubs over there that can help our talent go to the next level," Gauci empahsised. "Westmeadows Football Club is where I played my juniors and debuted as a senior at 17 years old, I knew this was a perfect club for us to link up with. I know that our players and the playing group at Westy will fit like a glove."

Acknowledging the differences in footy culture between New Zealand and Australia, Kosteas expressed excitement about the transformative experiences that lie ahead for the players. "We know these players will find footy quite different over here, being the lifeblood of this city. But it will be an amazing experience for them not just as footy players but as life experiences as well."

The partnership between the two clubs represents a strategic alliance that transcends borders, fostering camraderie, and sportsmanship between clubs and nations. "We are so excited to see where this Trans-Tasman partnership goes in the future" Kosteas added, underscoring the potential for growth and collaboration in the years to come.

With the introduction of trial/loan periods allowing players to immerse themselves in Melbourne-based footy life, Tigers players are posied to witness a surge in talent exchange and development, starting with the Justin Du Toit and Joey Alesich investigating the move. "We see these partnerships as a key tool for player recruitment," Gauci stated. "The link up and support networks AFL local clubs have will make any move from NZ to Australia much more appealing and could help us convince new players to give the sport a go."

As the North Shore Tigers and Westmeadows Football Club embark on the groundbreaking journey together, the AFL community eagerly anticipates the positive impact this partnership will have on the growth and development of the game, both domestically and internationally.
