North Shore Tigers Celebrate 50 Years as Auckland's Oldest AFL Club

The North Shore Tigers marked a historic milestone on Saturday night, celebrating their 50th anniversary with a special evening that brought together past and present players, coaches, and supporters for a night of reflection, recognition, and pride.

Held at the club’s home on Auckland’s North Shore, the event saw generations of Tigers gather to celebrate the rich history of New Zealand’s oldest AFL club. Former players and founding members made the trip back to reconnect with old teammates, share memories, and witness just how far the club has come since its beginnings in 1975.

A highlight of the night was a series of Q&A panels featuring Tigers from across the decades. Members shared stories of the club’s early struggles and triumphs, memorable premierships, and the unique culture that has made the Tigers such a lasting part of the New Zealand footy landscape. Laughter and nostalgia filled the room as tales from the 1980s through to the modern era painted a vivid picture of the club’s journey from a grassroots group of footy enthusiasts to one of the country’s most successful AFL organisations.

The evening also included a special moment of recognition, with long-time player, coach, and club stalwart Josh Cunliffe being awarded Life Membership for his years of dedication and service to the Tigers. Known for his leadership both on and off the field, Cunliffe’s contribution has been instrumental in shaping the club’s culture and success in recent years. His recognition was met with a standing ovation from the packed room.

As the night continued, stories flowed, friendships were rekindled, and a shared sense of pride filled the room. From the club’s early days at Onewa Domain to its modern dominance in both men’s and women’s competitions, the Tigers’ 50-year story stood as a testament to community, resilience, and passion for the game.

Club President Katie Adamson summed up the evening perfectly: “Fifty years is an incredible achievement. The Tigers have always been more than a football club, we’re a family. Tonight was about honouring everyone who’s worn the jumper, volunteered, coached, or cheered from the sidelines. It’s their legacy that keeps this club strong.”

With a proud past and a bright future ahead, the North Shore Tigers continue to embody the spirit of New Zealand AFL, competitive, connected, and community-driven. The 50th anniversary was more than a celebration of history; it was a reminder of what makes the Tigers truly special.

Here’s to the next 50 years of Tiger pride.
