Experienced Football Ferns midfielder Katie Duncan has retired from international football.

The 31-year-old, who has played 124 A Internationals for New Zealand since making her debut back in 2006, was a member of the Football Ferns squad who competed at the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup in France.

Duncan, a former vice-captain of the Ferns, played in three Olympic Games and four FIFA Women’s World Cups in a career spanning over 12 years.  She felt the time was right to hang up her boots.

“After recently becoming a new mum, I felt my priorities had changed,” said Duncan.  “Full commitment is required especially in a team sport, and I was starting to feel my heart was just no longer 100 percent in it.

“It was a tough decision, but I am pleased to leave at a time where the future of football in New Zealand looks bright. Thank you to those who have supported me along the way, the girls (Ferns), support team, NZ Football, family and of course [my wife] Cilla who has put up with me, having football coming first for the last 12 years!”

Duncan has also retired from the Auckland Football team in the National Women’s League, but she will continue to play and coach at Onehunga Sports next year.
