New Zealand Pony Clubs Association (NZPCA) and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing (NZTR) have announced a three-year partnership to create new opportunities for Pony Club members and support Thoroughbreds in their lives beyond racing.

Building on their existing relationship, the partnership brings together a shared commitment to horse welfare, education and rider development.

The partnership will focus on:

• Rider development – Supporting Pony Club members riding and developing Thoroughbreds, including new scholarship opportunities.

• Education and horse welfare – Sharing knowledge and practical guidance on responsible ownership, horse care and retraining former racehorses.

• Career pathways – Connecting young people with opportunities in the racing and breeding industries through industry visits, practical experiences and expert advice.

• Thoroughbred recognition – Celebrating the versatility and achievements of Thoroughbreds across Pony Club activities and equestrian disciplines.

NZTR General Manager Welfare and Industry Capability, Sam Fursdon, says the partnership creates opportunities for both people and horses.

“Pony Club is where many young people develop their love of horses and the horsemanship skills that can underpin a future in our industry.”

NZPCA Chief Executive Lizzie Turnbull welcomes the partnership.

“We look forward to working with NZTR to support our riders, celebrate the versatility of Thoroughbreds and help young people discover the opportunities available to them.”

What's next?

NZPCA and NZTR will work together to develop an annual activity plan, building on existing initiatives and introducing new opportunities for members.

Further details, including how to apply for the Thoroughbred Rider Scholarship, will be shared as they become available.
