Curriculum

Junior curriculum (years 9-10) | Tau (9-10) Teina

Tauira in Year 9 will be placed in both a House and a class. Learning throughout the week will be delivered in either of these groupings. Tauira cover all areas of the New Zealand Curriculum.

We also enrich our curriculum through Aspirations, Heath & Wellbeing programmes, Education Outside the Classroom and special interest programmes.

Tauira in Year 10 are also placed in a House and class. In addition, they have 'Options' which gives them more opportunities to explore their interests and passions.

Enrichment programmes are also available in Year 10.

Senior curriculum (years 11-13) | Tau (11-13) Tuākana

The school offers an extensive curriculum and is able to cater for all our tauira's diverse pathways on leaving school.

All senior tauira select five subjects/ courses over the week (students are able to do more subjects in consultation with the DP: Pathways and Pedagogy).

Our timetable is flexible and offers tauira the opportunity to study multiple year levels.

Most courses are a year long, although short term courses covering the acquisition of specific skills are offered, ie first aid, health & safety forklift and work ready qualifications.

Our curriculum is responsive to our students needs, community aspirations and future focused directions.

e-Volcanics

Ōpōtiki College is a member of the Volcanics e-Learning Community

As a member of volcanics, we are able to provide students with access to teachers from other schools through eLearning. Students are able to use this opportunity to resolve a “timetable clash” or to study a different course or at a different level. 3000 students study this way around New Zealand.

Each eLearning course will have one or more of the following learning components:

• Paper based (workbooks, textbooks and notes)
• An online component accessed through an online learning environment such as Moodle, UltraNet, KnowledgeNet, Google Docs
• Video conferencing (VC), or web based conferencing using Adobe Connect

All courses offer NZQA Achievement Standards and/or Unit Standards. Communication is maintained through video conferencing, skype, text, email and through the online learning environment.

Please note that acceptance into a virtual course is dependent upon available resources, the level of student enrollment and the timing of the enrollment. Sometimes students will be on a waiting list for a short time.

Acceptance into eLearning courses will also be determined by a recommendation that the student is sufficiently self-motivated and has the ability to work with less direct teacher supervision than would normally be the case in a face to face class.
