About our Club

Our club was originally formed in the early 1980s, founding members were Bruce Benseman, Steve Elgar and Peter Housiaux (Pete is still a member of the club, being honoured with Life Membership over 10 years ago, and continues as a Coach, a Polo Player, and a committee member). All three men were involved in multisport/triathlons, surf life saving, and general river kayaking.  Skills gained through canoe polo, complimented their other outdoor pursuits

On the 15th January 1991, the club was officially incorporated under the name of the Horowhenua Canoe Club, having grown dramatically since its formation, back in the 1980s.  With a name change to the Ōtaki Canoe Club Inc in 2004
