Cycling

In Cycling, Blind athletes compete with sighted guides on tandem bicycles, ambulant and cerebral palsy athletes compete on standard bikes or bikes that are specifically designed to meet their needs. The competition programme at the Paralympics includes track and road events as well as time trials.

Hand Cycling is for athletes who normally require a wheelchair for general mobility, or athletes who are not able to use a conventional bike or trike because of severe lower limb disability.

Paralympic Classification

The classification system for cycling follows:
- 1 classes for athletes with a visual impairment (tandem bicycle)
- 4 classes for people with cerebral alsy (2 bicycle classes, 2 tricycle classes)
- 4 classes for people who have locomotor disorders and who can ride a conventional bike.
- 3 classes for Hand cycling.

HANDCYCLING group

Rides every Tuesday @ 5.30pm, Thursday @ 5.30pm and Sunday @ 7.00am, meeting at the Arataki shops and ride from there. Shortest ride would be around 26km and longest around 60km. The rides can be from Arataki to the Mount and back, out to Te Tumu Road via the cycleway and over to Tauaranga via the Matapihi Rail bridge.

We are just a social group of handcycists that are trying to keep fit and enjoy hanging with like minded people. Currently we have a usual core group of 4 riders but sometimes there can 7 or so. We are more than happy to have new riders join in and help get them started with shorter rides. We have ridden the Rotorua cycleway towards Taupo and around Mount Taranaki.
