In 1991 when the first Poneke women's rugby team took the field only 3000 female players we’re register with the NZRFU. Girls weren't allowed to play rugby at school back then. Many of us grew up at Poneke or similar clubs watching our fathers, brothers, uncles and cousins play. Thanks to the support of forward thinking Poneke stalwarts (too many to mention) we could finally play the sport we loved for our club. Since 1991 many women players have proudly worn the red and black jersey.
Women's rugby has grown immensely since the 1990’s. Rugby is now the fastest growing sport in NZ for girls and women. This year over 22,000 females throughout NZ played rugby.
The current Poneke women's team show the positive development of the women's game at Poneke. We past players were powerful, strong and fast but the players of today have amazing skills and a greater understanding of the technical and tactical aspects of rugby. Although you still don't see enough media coverage of Women's rugby you no longer hear on the sidelines - “girls can't play rugby.”
Poneke girls and women can and do play great rugby.
