CURRICULUM
MUSIC

The Music Curriculum is an important pillar of learning for our students. Next to the co-curricular opportunities and instrumental tuition the curriculum / music classes enable students deepen their knowledge of all aspects of music and gain valuable credits on their way to achieve University Entry.

The individual music programmes for the classroom are listed in the next column. The College offers a comprehensive pathways from Year 9 to Year 13 as well as Music Scholarship. The curriculum is cleverly intervowen with the co-curricular and combines skill-based practical learning with academic concepts and context around music.

Music is a highly successful learning area of the school, where students usually exceed their own expectations. This doesn't mean however that it is only for highly experienced students or prodigees. We are especially proud of the fact that our students often develop in our department from beginner to expert level and grow to be respected and well-rounded musicians.

The academic concepts and thinking skills taught in the music classroom are extremely valuable for students aiming at any academic tertiary study. Music students not only achieve on average higher overall grades (GPA) than students that don't take music, our program also leads seamlessly into the academic requirements of tertiary study. One example of this can be seen in the unique course designs especially in Year 12 / 13, which allows students to choose standards individually for themselves. A second example would be the teaching of academic research, which is modelled on current tertiary requirements and enables students to practise the exact type of research required for any University subject.

In ADDITION to Core Music, students may also choose Music as an Option in Year 9. The course intends to enable students an in-depth look into music at high-school level. The course does not double up on the learning in the core music course, instead it extends from there and focusses on individual achievement goals for each student. While students don't have to have vast experience in playing a musical instrument, it is recommended that students are interested in learning one.
