The Otangarei Knights have etched their name into Rugby League Northland history, claiming their third consecutive Grand Final victory at Semenoff Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Facing off against last year’s finalists, the Takahiwai Warriors, the Knights proved once again why they’re the benchmark of the competition, taking out the 2025 Men’s RLN Premier Grand Final with a commanding 26–12 win.
The day was a celebration of rugby league in Te Tai Tokerau, with whānau, friends, and loyal supporters packing the stands to witness a full day of finals footy. The action kicked off with the Northland U16 Boys Grand Final, where the Orowhana Dragons came out on top against a determined Kerikeri Mako side in a spirited curtain-raiser that set the tone for the day.
When the Premier final got underway, the crowd was treated to 80 minutes of fierce, physical league – a fitting finale for two of Northland’s top clubs. Takahiwai held a narrow 12–10 lead at halftime, testing the Knights’ composure, but Otangarei regrouped at the break and stormed home in the second spell with trademark grit and flair.
Head Coach Verne Wilson (Ngāti Toro) credited his side’s resilience and unity for the result.
“I’m proud of how the team stuck in,” Wilson said. “We were down 12–10 to Takahiwai at halftime, but the boys managed to refocus, tighten up defensively, and pull it back. That’s what whanaungatanga is all about — having each other’s backs when it matters most.”
As the final whistle blew, the stands erupted in celebration. For many, it wasn’t just about another trophy — it was a moment of pride for the Otangarei community and a reflection of the strength of league across Northland.
From juniors to premiers, the day showcased the passion, talent, and unity that define rugby league in the North. And as the sun set over Semenoff Stadium, one thing was clear — the Otangarei Knights’ dynasty is alive and well.
