Athletics at Rongotai College

Athletics is the cornerstone of our sporting programme. Students can participate in various athletic disciplines, including sprinting and middle-distance running, as well as throwing and jumping events. Athletes proudly represent Rongotai College at annual local, regional, and national championships, including the renowned McEvedy Shield—the largest secondary school athletics meet in the Southern Hemisphere. ​​​​​​​

Training

Starting in January, training will run throughout Term 1 until the Regional Athletics Championships. 

Training Days are: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday

All trainings are at Newtown Park

Athletics events in the 2026 sporting calendar include

Rongotai College Athletics Day: Tuesday, February 3

Rongotai College Athletics Finals: Friday, February 13

McEvedy Shield Athletics Meet: Tuesday, March 3.​​​​​​​

NZSS Athletics Championships: Friday 11 - Sunday 13 December, Location TBC.

Cost

All athletics training is free of charge. Participation in regional and national championships will incur additional fees. 

Rongotai College strongly encourages all students to participate in athletics and earn a position on the Rongotai College McEevedy Shield Team. Alternatively, students interested in making winter premier sporting teams should consider incorporating athletics into their preseason preparation.
