Where is Rock Climbing?
Rock climbing alternates between the Adventure Centre and Uprising. The Adventure Centre has top-rope & lead climbing facilities and a small boulder cave, while Uprising is a large bouldering-only facility.
What If It's My First Time Climbing?
- If it is your first time climbing, you must have filled out the waivers before coming climbing!
- All the centres will take you through an induction that is unique to their facility. The Adventure Centre will ensure that you can safely put on your harness and use a Grigri belay device. Uprising will ensure that you can climb up/down safely and know how to be aware of your surroundings.
- Please be aware that your first day may be a little slow due to the induction, but be patient as you only have to do it on your first day (or if you haven't climbed in a few months)!
- The Adventure Centre provides harnesses and shoes for free, Uprising provides shoes for free (subject to availability). You are able to climb in sneakers at either facility, but climbing shoes are much preferred!
- The Rock Climbing Club has a small selection of shoes and climbing chalk which students can borrow free of charge, on a first come first served basis.
What Is The Cost?
- Adventure Centre: $15 entry + free shoe & harness hire ($135 for a 10-concession pass).
- Uprising: $17 entry + free shoe hire (subject to availability)
Cashmere Costs:
- Signup: $10. This supports the group's ability to run small events and provide a small amount of equipment ourselves.
- A one-off sports levy of $30 will also be applied to all students' school accounts to cover administration costs.
Students MUST pay for the facilities directly each time they attend. Please ensure students bring cash or an eftpos card to be able to climb.
What About Transport?
Due to the number of sports being run on Wednesday at Cashmere High School, there are no school vans available for rock climbing. However:
- By Car
Some teachers volunteer to help transport students to and from school. Year 9 and 10 students are usually prioritised for this transport, and seniors are usually asked if they can find their own way there. See the transport roster posted on WhatsApp (see your Sporty signup confirmation email). - By Bike
It is a 15-minute bike ride (3.7km) to the Adventure Centre so a very efficient way to get there. It is only another 5 minutes to Uprising. Cyclists often arrive before those in cars, please cycle carefully. Meet at the flag pole to cycle with other climbers. - Parents
If you are a parent and are able to offer your student or their friends transport on Wednesday, please either let Mr Jonathan Kettle know or organise it with your student and their friends. Any help here would be most appreciated!
