Slim Hurring joined the Gardens Club in Oamaru in the 2003-04 Season.

Slim was involved with the 2003 Oamaru Victorian Heritage Celebrations in October/November and saw the game played in the Gardens by players dressed in Victorian clothes, he was fascinated and joined the Gardens club.

In 2004 he played in the SC Combined Handicap doubles at Labour weekend with E Mitchell and they won; he played in the SC Annual tournament C grade division and won. Later in the season he travelled to Invercargill and won the B grade Division of the Southland annual tournament.
As the winner of  the Arthur Ross handicap competition in his club and then the Association he travelled to Wellington in March 2005 and won the National Arthur Ross Handicap Competition.
A wonderful first season for the new player.

In 2006 Slim played in the NZ 4+ Championship which was played in Timaru and won both the Championship and the Handicap events and also combined again with E Mitchell to win the Doubles; a clean sweep for him at the event.

In November 2006 Slim played in the 0-3 NZCC Invitations at the North Shore Club where he aquitted himself well and although he did not win the event he recorded the only triple peel of the event.

Slim then played for the NZ A team  against the Australian A team in February 2007. The event was in Auckland.
