Thirty-four students from across Selwyn experienced the pure joy of learning to ride a bike for the very first time during Terms 1 and 2 of 2025, thanks to the ongoing mahi of the Selwyn Sports Trust’s iBike Programme. From nervous first wobbles to wide smiles and proud high-fives, these young riders have taken an unforgettable step in their journey toward confidence, independence, and wellbeing.

Led by iBike coordinator Sarah McClure, the programme continues to break down barriers to cycling. “Across Terms 1 and 2, we’ve supported 34 absolute beginners alongside improving the bike skills of 674 Year 5 and 6 students, all of whom have completed a minimum two-hour iBike session,” says McClure. “Our aim is not just to teach kids to ride, but to create lifelong riders who enjoy cycling as a part of their daily lives. Seeing that moment when a child realises ‘I can do this’ is magic. It’s about so much more than riding. It’s about confidence, resilience, and joy.”

At Rolleston Primary, teacher Tiffany Roycroft witnessed one of those special moments firsthand. “In my 20 years of teaching, this was genuinely one of the greatest moments I’ve been part of. Lexus was really nervous to even get on the bike at the start, but with some gentle encouragement and support, she gave it a go. By the end of the session she was riding confidently and had the biggest smile on her face,” says Roycroft. “It brought me so much joy to see her so proud of herself. It was such a cool moment to be involved in, helping her learn and watching it click was something I’ll never forget.”

The iBike Programme is about more than just learning a skill. It’s opening up access to transport, recreation, and a lifelong love of movement. For many of these tamariki, the opportunity to ride a bike boosts not only physical health, but also confidence, social connection, and overall well being.

Selwyn Sports Trust is proud to deliver this kaupapa with the generous support of Oakleys Premium Fresh Vegetables, the iBike Programme’s Principal Sponsor. “None of this happens without Oakleys,” says McClure. “Their long-standing support and genuine commitment to our kaupapa means more kids across Selwyn are getting the opportunity to learn how to ride a bike. They’re not just supporting a programme, they’re helping us open up access, build confidence, and create lifelong memories for these tamariki on their bikes.”

Looking ahead, the Trust is excited to expand the iBike Programme into even more schools across Selwyn during Terms 3 and 4. With momentum building and more tamariki getting the chance to ride, the impact is only just beginning.

Ends.
