The Werohia initiative offers whānau opportunities to participate as a whānau in an as Māori context.

  • Introductory to Waka Ama for whānau or individuals
  • Learn basic Waka Ama Te Reo & Tikanga
  • Learn basic forward paddle stroke
  • Fun, safe environment with a splash of race excitement
  • Connects whānau with HB Waka Ama Clubs
  • Potential to increase membership for Waka Ama Clubs
  • Earn MaraeFit points at every session

General Information

  • Annually, normally starts at end of January
  • 4 Friday sessions, 2 races per team
  • Minimal cost at $10 per team or
  • $2 per individual per session
  • Venue – Pandora Pond & Clive River
  • Final session – Marae, intergenerational races



  • Learn the cultural significance/history of areas in your own rohe (region)
  • Opportunity to learn and be active as a Whānau at the same time
  • Current series 1.0 in the Whanganui-a-Orotu (Napier) rohe:
  1. Otatara Pā,
  2. Puke Iohiohio (Park Island),
  3. Roro-ō-Kuri (Eskview)
  4. Te Ipu a Taraia (Pondora Pond)
  • Developing Series in Tamatea, Heretaunga and Wairoa region
