Albion Excelsior have had an almost flawless run so far in Division Two Pool A, picking up 29 of the possible 30 competition points that have been on offer. Their neighbours Pioneer have been almost as impressive picking up five wins from six matches to sit on 25 competition points. The other four sides have it all to play for in the final few weeks of pool play with the top three teams going through to the Division two top section. Just two points separate Tokanui, Waikiwi and Riverton, with DLS only a further four points off the pace. This ensures all six teams have something on the line before Division Two splits into a top and bottom section in four weeks.
This week’s match of the round is always going to be a tight arm wrestle and Albion Excelsior's and Pioneers previous match up in the round one did not disappoint.
With another horrible week of weather can the rain stay away for the teams to put their best performance on the park? With the nerves high for both teams it will be integral to minimise the mistakes and maximise points as both teams are capable of taking an early advantage, it is just a matter of who will take the lead first.
Will Pioneer play with the same game plan as round one? That is, with the call to play territory and make full use of possession when in good field position. This will only pay off if Pioneer can mitigate Albion Excelsior’s ability to turn the ball over and break through the defensive structure to score. Watch out for Troy Wyatt, although in the front row he is able to score for his side and with Callum Jack able to kick conversions when it really matters could put the pressure on the home side.
Albion Excelsior are ready for their rivalry and acknowledge that you never know who will take the win in this close competition. All that is expected from the team is to play as a unit and let teamwork speak for itself on the field. The home side needs to relish the advantage of playing infront of a good supportive home crowd. Albion Excelsior will also be hosting a previous player and sponsors lunch which in anyone’s books, is a great way to build atmosphere for the big game.
