From grass roots to high performance, coaches play an integral role in the sporting fabric of sport in New Zealand.
Coaches have a major influence in the growth and development of the people they interact with regardless of age and a key role of the coach is to enrich and improve the quality of experience of people participating sport. The people that develop the coaches are called Coach Developers and they play a crucial role in the way coaches are developed, supported and nurtured.
Development of both Coach Developers and coaches is a core activity in an effective coaching system. Sport Canterbury works collaboratively with National and Regional Sport Organisations, as well as educational organisations to advocate and support Coach Developer and Coach Development opportunities.
It is important to develop and nurture coaches and Coach developers who deliver coaching and coach development experiences. Sport Canterbury provides various learning opportunities for both Coach Developers and coaches.
Coach Developers play a crucial role in the initial formal training of coaches as well as in the way coaches are developed, supported and nurtured on the job.It is useful to understand where Coach Developers sit along the continuum of coach and athlete development. Coaches work with and develop athletes; Coach Developers develop the coaches; Trainers develop the Coach developers and Master Trainers train the Trainers.
Sport NZ developed a National 3-day residential Coach Developer Training Course with the aim to improve the confidence, capability and effectiveness of coach developers across all sports. The course is delivered by experienced trainers licensed by Sport NZ. The course provides a blueprint for sports organisations to adapt and apply to their own coach development needs.
