West Coast Rugby League's Wingham Park showcased a commitment to secondary school sport development, as eight teams competed for the Trevor Kilkelly Memorial Trophy, and eight student referees took the field as well.
A focus on girls in League saw 20 girls playing across the teams from Grey Main (trophy winners), St Patricks, Karoro, Paroa, St Marys, Westland High, Grey Main Red and Cobden.
The competition went ahead following a night of torrential rain, which subsided to a morning of sunshine in spite of soggy fields.
Sport Canterbury's West Coast Regional Office worked with Phil Campbell to introduce a modified version of the 9's back in 2007. According to West Coast Regional Office Manager Jack O'Connor, "It's pleasing to see it going strongly as part of the annual sports calendar."
Local sport development officer Paddy Byrne oversaw the eight secondary school referees who gained valuable experience through the tournament.
"Paddy does a wonderful job encouraging participation here, and we value the relationship he has developed with Sport Canterbury."
