HOCKEY

CLUB FORMATION

St Bede’s Hockey Club have a very good alignment with the Marist Hockey Club which sees us share Marist Park for practices and some games.

Hockey is played on Friday nights at Nga Puna Wai, Nunweek Park and sometimes we are lucky that teams are drawn to play at Marist Park, which is located at St Bede’s College. Training also occurs at various times during the week depending on turf availability at Marist Park, usually on either a Monday or Thursday.

More detailed information will be made available early in Term 1 outlining pre-season training, trials and season dates as well as specific hockey details.

For the 2023 season the St Bedes Hockey club has teams in the following grades:

1st XI - Connect SSP Boys Championship

2nd XI - SSL Boys Division 1 Championship

3rd XI -  SSL Boys Division 3 Championship

Colts - SSL Boys Division 4 Championship

Hockey is in very good heart at the College

David Brydon has made College history being selected as the College’s Black Cap in 2016

5 Bedeans played in the inaugural Otautahi Cup November 14 & 15th, which took the place of the cancelled National Hockey Championship.   4 in the Men’s A team (The Cavaliers) and 1 in the B team (The Beavers)

From left to right - David Brydon, George Baker, Ben Grimshaw (SBC 1st XI coach), Joe Morrison, Charlie Morrison.

Joe Morrison, a recent Old Boy of the College (2015-2019), has recently been named in the NZ Men’s Hockey squad, the Black Sticks.

From this squad a travelling team will be chosen for a tour to Europe and the Commonwealth Games in July.

Joe played hockey for St Bede’s College throughout his school years, captaining the side for two years, and leading the team to win the India Shield in 2019.

He has also played in the Marist Premier Men’s side for the last 5 years, and has been an age group Canterbury representative since U13 level.

Last year he was a member of the Canterbury Men’s Hockey team, and won the Outstanding Men’s Player award at the Canterbury Hockey Awards for the 2021 season.

Joe is in his 3rd year of a Mechanical Engineering degree at Canterbury University.

He has moved to Auckland for the first half of this year to pursue his hockey goals, and is able to work remotely to continue his engineering studies.

CHARLIE MORRISON                  BLACK STICK 2023

Charlie Morrison, who was the St Bede’s 1st XI Captain in 2021, was first named to play for the NZ Black Sticks in the Hockey World Cup in January 2023, and has recently been named in the side for the upcoming Pro-League series in Christchurch.

Charlie first started playing hockey when he was about 8 years old, playing along with his brother and other friends including George Baker, who all also played rugby.

Hockey became his main sport aged 13, and he went on to play age group representative hockey at U13, U15 and U18 level, being in the Canterbury U18 team which won the national title in 2019.

Charlie played in the St Bede’s 1st XI for five years, captaining the side in his final year. He was part of the team who won the India Shield in 2019. Unfortunately Covid lockdowns and lack of Rankin Cup tournaments in the following two years made it difficult for St Bede’s to capitalise on this position.

He plays Club hockey for the Marist Premier team, who have won three Canterbury club titles.

In 2021 and 2022 Charlie was a member of the Canterbury Men’s Hockey team.

He was playing for the Junior Black Sticks in Dec 2022 when he was named to play in the World Cup in India the following month.

Charlie is currently in his 2nd year of a Bachelor of Commerce degree at Lincoln University.

WOW, four Bedeans in our national team!

Congratulations to OB's George Baker (2016-2020) and Charlie Morrison (2017-2021) who have both been named in the Men's Vantage Blacksticks for the FIH Pro League series against Australia and Great Britain which starts tomorrow! George and Charlie join current St Bede's OB Blackstick David Brydon (2010-2014) in the squad and OB Blackstick Joe Morrison (2015-2019) who is sitting out this series due to injury.
