ROWING

Registrations are now open for the 2026/27 Season.

If you missed registration get in contact with James Smith we are still taking in rowers. You don't need to be year 9 to start rowing. St Bedes have a proud reputation in the novice eight at the Maadi cup so we take new rowers from all year groups.

For generations, rowing has been an important part of life at St Bede's, challenging young men to discover what they are capable of both on and off the water.

Our programme has a proud history, including winning the Maadi Cup in 1992 and again in 2023. These achievements reflect the dedication, commitment and teamwork of the many students, coaches and supporters who have contributed to the programme over the years. While we are proud of our history, our focus remains on providing current and future rowers with the opportunity to develop skills, resilience and friendships that last well beyond school.

Rowing offers something unique. It rewards hard work, discipline and consistency. Athletes learn to work as a crew, support their teammates and push themselves further than they thought possible. Whether your goal is to compete at the highest level, improve your fitness, or simply be part of a strong team environment, there is a place for you at St Bede's Rowing.

We are also keen to welcome students interested in becoming coxswains. The coxswain is much more than a passenger in the boat; they are the on-water leader of the crew, responsible for steering, race tactics, communication and motivating rowers to perform at their best. It is a role that develops confidence, leadership and decision-making skills under pressure.

Coxswains are typically lighter athletes, generally around 55 kg or less at secondary school level, although exact requirements can vary. Students who fit this profile and enjoy leading others, thinking tactically and being part of a close-knit team are encouraged to give coxing a try. A skilled coxswain can make a significant difference to a crew's performance and is every bit as important to success as the athletes pulling the oars.

As we look ahead to another season, we invite students to become part of a programme built on hard work, camaraderie and a tradition of striving for excellence. Whether you pick up an oar or take the coxswain's seat, you will join a community that values commitment, character and representing St Bede's with pride.
