Respect the rights, dignity and worth of every individual as a human being;

  • Treat everyone equally regardless of sex, disability, ethnic origin or religion.
  • Respect the talent, development stage and goals of each player to help them reach their full potential.
  • Ensure your approach aligns with the Catholic Character of St John’s College.

Maintain high standards of integrity;

  • Operate within the rules of your sport and in the spirit of fair play, while encouraging your players to do the same.
  • Advocate an environment free of drugs and other performance-enhancing substances.
  • Do not disclose any confidential information relating to players without their written consent prior.

Be a positive role model and act in a way that projects a positive image of coaching;

  • All players are deserving of equal attention and opportunities.
  • Ensure the players time spent with you is a positive experience.
  • Be fair, considerate and honest with players.
  • Encourage and promote a healthy lifestyle, do not smoke or drink alcohol around players.

Professional Responsibilities;

  • Display high standards in your language, manner, punctuality, preparation and presentation.
  • Display control, courtesy, respect, honesty, dignity and professionalism to all involved within the sphere of rugby. This includes opponents, coaches, officials, administrators, the media, parents and spectators. Always encourage your players to demonstrate the same qualities.
  • Be professional and accept responsibility for your actions.
  • Accurately represent personal coaching qualifications, experience, competence and affiliations.
  • Refrain from criticism of other coaches and players.

Make a commitment to providing a quality service to your players;

  • Seek continual improvement through ongoing coaching education and other personal and professional development opportunities.
  • Provide players with planned and structured training programmes appropriate to their needs and goals.
  • Seek advice and assistance from professionals when additional expertise is required.
  • Maintain appropriate records.

Provide a safe environment for training and competition;

  • Adopt appropriate risk management strategies to ensure that the training and/or competition environment is safe and upholds the St John’s College Health and Safety Policies.
  • Ensure equipment and facilities meet safety standards.
  • Ensure equipment, rules, training and the environment are appropriate for the age, physical maturity, emotional maturity, experience and ability of the players.
  • Allow further participation in training and competition, only when appropriate.
  • Encourage players to seek medical advice when required.
  • Provide a modified training programme where appropriate.
  • Maintain the same interest and support towards sick and injured players as you would to healthy players.

Protect your players from any form of personal abuse;

  • Refrain from any form of verbal, physical or emotional abuse towards your players.
  • Do not harass, abuse or discriminate against players.
  • Any physical contact with players should be appropriate to the situation and necessary for the players skill development.
  • Be alert to any forms of abuse directed towards players from other sources while in your care.

Coaches should:

  • Be treated with respect and openness
  • Have access to self-improvement opportunities
  • Be matched with a level of coaching appropriate to the ability


Code of Conduct for St Johns Rugby Officials and Volunteers

The essence of good ethical conduct and practise is summarised below. All volunteers must:

  • Consider the wellbeing and safety of participants before the development of performance.
  • Develop an appropriate working relationship with participants based on mutual trust and respect.
  • Make sure all activities are appropriate to the age, ability and experience of those taking part.
  • Promote the positive aspects of rugby, e.g fair play.
  • Display consistently high standards of behaviour and appearance.
  • Follow all guidelines laid down by the St John’s College.
  • Hold appropriate, valid qualifications if applicable.
  • Never exert undue influence over participants to obtain personal benefit or reward.
  • Never condone rule violations, rough play or the use of prohibited substances.
  • Encourage participants to value their performances, not just results.
  • Encourage and guide participants to accept responsibility for their own performance and behaviour.
  • Ensure you are a role model of the Catholic Character of St John’s College through actions, words and encourage the participants to do the same.
  • Ensure you understand that you are accountable for the Health and Safety standards of St John’s College students and that they are in your care. Health and Safety Document is referenced in here.
  • Ensure you return all uniforms and equipment belonging to St John’s College to the Sport’s Co-Ordinator/Office in good condition at the end of the season.
  • Ensure that side line behaviour of all parents is acceptable and supports the Catholic Character of St John’s College.


Code of Conduct for Parents/Carers of St John’s College

  • Encourage your child to learn the rules and play within the team.
  • Discourage unfair play and arguing with officials.
  • Help your child to recognise good performance, not just results.
  • Never force your child to take part in sport.
  • Set a good example by recognising fair play and applauding good performance of all.
  • Never punish or belittle a child for losing or making mistakes.
  • Publicly accept official’s judgements.
  • Support your child’s involvement and help them to enjoy their sport.
  • Always use correct and proper language.
  • Encourage and guide participants to accept responsibility for their own performance and behaviour.
  • Complete a sport online registration.
  • Pay all sport charges on time.
  • Encourage adherence to the school rules.
  • Ensure your child is compliant with the St John’s College uniform including mouthguard and boots etc as outlined in Players Handbook.
  • Attend the Sport Club AGM where possible.
  • Discuss any concerns with the Director of Sport, Head of Department or a school teacher.
  • Ensure your side line behaviour and that of others around you are in the Catholic Character of St John’s College.
  • Attend any meeting if requested with a minimum of 48 hours’ notice.


Code of Conduct for St John’s College Players

St John’s College is fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all it’s students. St John’s believes it is important that students, coaches, administrators and parents associated with the school should always show respect and understanding for the safety and welfare of others. Therefore, students are encouraged to be open at all times and to share any concerns or complaints that they may have about any aspect of the club with the Teacher in Charge of Rugby.

As a student of St John’s, you are expected to abide by the following Players Code of Conduct:

  • All students must play within the rules and respect officials and their decisions.
  • All students must respect the rights, dignity and worth of all participants regardless of gender, ability, cultural background or religion.
  • Students should keep to agreed timings for training and competitions or inform their coach or team manager if they are going to be late or have any injuries.
  • Students must wear suitable kit including mouthguard and boots for training and match sessions, as instructed by Manager/Coaching Staff through Players Handbook.
  • Students must register online and pay any fees for training or events promptly.
  • Students must demonstrate the Catholic Character of St John’s College through their actions and words.
  • Students will attend classes regularly and understand that consistent unjustifiable absence could result in dismissal from rugby.
  • Students must complete school work in their downtime while away at any tournament.



SPECTATORS' Code of Conduct

  • Remember that children play organised sports for their own fun.
  • Any inappropriate behaviour reflects badly on your son, the team and St John’s College.
  • Applaud good play by your own team and the opposition.
  • Show respect for your team’s opponents.  Without them there would be no games.
  • Never ridicule or scold a child for making a mistake during a game.
  • Condemn the use of violence in all forms.
  • Respect the referee’s decision.
  • Encourage players to play according to the rules.
