Racing Classes


There are two categories contested, Non-Gearbox and Gearbox. See below for the details of each class within these categories. Rotax Light, Rotax Heavy, KZ2 and DD2 are all standard Sprint Karts with very simple alterations required to make them eligible for SuperKart competition. Non-Gearbox Classes


125cc Rotax Max Light and 125CC Rotax Max Heavy:

Both of these classes are an easy transition from a normal sprint kart to a SuperKart. It's just a change of gearing, change of jetting, the fitting a rain light and you are good to go racing with minimum financial outlay.


Front bodywork is optional at 95% of our meetings; most newcomers to SuperKarting usually run a standard sprint style nosecone for their first few meetings.


Below are the requirements for both the Rotax Light and Heavy classes:

Eligible engine: Bombardier Rotax FR125 Max to KartSport New Zealand specs.

Minimum age: Competitors aged in the calendar year of their 15th birthday and over.

MAW: 165kg. (Light)

MAW: 185kg. (Heavy)

Fuel: Pump petrol (Rule L4.1)

Tyre restricted class. (Rule L3.5)

Front and rear dry tyre wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks fitted on the outside of each rim.

Brakes: Front wheel brakes not permitted.

Karts must comply with Sprint chassis rules (K1) unless otherwise noted.

No belt drives, axle clutches or semi laydown seats.

Bodywork: (Rule S3.4.1)

No seat may be at less than 45˚ measured to the horizontal.

KZ2:

This class is an easy transition from a normal sprint kart to a SuperKart. It's just a change of gearing, change of jetting, the fitting a rain light and you are good to go racing with minimum financial outlay.


Front bodywork is optional at 95% of our meetings; most newcomers to SuperKarting usually run a standard sprint style nosecone for their first few meetings.


125cc reed valve engine as homologated by the CIK for the KZ2 class with the homologated gearbox ratios, homologated exhaust pipe and a CIK homologated inlet silencer and exhaust silencer for the respective engine.

Minimum age: Competitors aged in the calendar year of their 15th birthday and over

MAW: 184kg.

Fuel: Pump petrol (Rule L4.1)

Wheels: 5”. The front and rear wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks fitted on the outside of each rim.

Karts must comply with Sprint chassis rules (K1) unless otherwise noted.

No belt drives, axle clutches or semi laydown seats.

Bodywork: (Rule S3.4.1)

No seat may be at less than 45˚ measured to the horizontal.

Dry tyres: KartSport New Zealand contracted tyres only

Wet Tyres: CIK homologated tyres as per the KartSport New Zealand tyre list.

Brakes (Rule S3.8.1)

Bodywork: (Rule S3.4.2)

Rotax DD2:

This class is an easy transition from a normal sprint kart to a SuperKart. It's just a change of the gear set, change of jetting, the fitting a rain light and you are good to go racing with minimum financial outlay.


Front bodywork is optional at 95% of our meetings; most newcomers to SuperKarting usually run a standard sprint style nosecone for their first few meetings.


Eligible engine: Bombardier Rotax 125 Max DD2 to KartSport New Zealand specs.

MAW: 185kg.

Minimum age: Competitors aged in the calendar year of their 15th birthday and over

Clutch: Obligatory and must be original Rotax Clutch (Rule M2)

Primary drive gear ratios unrestricted.

Fuel: Pump petrol (Rule L4.1)

Tyre restricted class: (Rule L3.5)

Front and rear dry tyre wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks fitted on the outside of each rim.

Brakes: Operating on front and rear wheels mandatory.

Karts must comply with Sprint chassis rules (K1) unless otherwise noted.

No semi laydown seats allowed. No seat may be at less than 45 degrees measured to the horizontal.

Bodywork: (Rule S3.4.1)

Chassis: 125-MAX-DD2- specific

National 125:

This class is currently not contested in New Zealand. These karts use an International class chassis and only compete on the full size motor racing circuits. They are powered by a single cylinder 125cc engine. The 125cc KZ2 class is strong and provides similar performance at a cheaper price.


Eligible engines: Any single cylinder 2 stroke engine not exceeding 125cc.

Carburettor: Single carburettor, venture size and shape open.

Minimum age: Competitors aged in the calendar year of their 15th birthday and over

MAW: 210kg

Chassis: International SuperKart chassis (Rule S3)

6” Dry and Wet tyres only. Dry tyres must have a 220kph minimum speed rating.

The tyre manufacturer’s minimum tyre pressure settings must be observed.

Rear wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks on the outside and three bead locks on the inside of each rim.

Front wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks fitted on the outside of the rim.

Fuel: Category 1 or 2 (Rule L4.1)

Brakes (Rule S3.8.1)

Bodywork: (Rule S3.4.2)


National 250:

This class is not well supported at the moment. These karts use an International class chassis and only compete on the full size motor racing circuits. They are powered by a single cylinder 250cc engine instead of the high performance twin cylinder engines used by the International class.


Minimum Age: 17 years old.

Eligible engines: Any single cylinder 2 stroke engine not exceeding 250cc.

Carburettor: Single carburettor, venturi size and shape open.

MAW: International SuperKart chassis: 215kg

Sprint chassis: 205kg

Chassis: International SuperKart or Sprint Chassis (Rule S3)

6” Dry and Wet tyres only. Dry tyres must have a 220 kilometres per hour minimum speed rating.

The tyre manufacturer’s minimum tyre pressure settings must be observed.

Rear wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks on the outside and three bead locks on the inside of each rim.

Front wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks fitted on the outside of the rim.

International:

This is the pinnacle of SuperKart racing! These rocket ships only compete on the full size motor racing circuits and reach speeds in excess of 230 kilometres per hour! The chassis are purpose built SuperKart chassis with full aerodynamic bodywork and engines pumping out 95 horsepower. This class is one that you would progress into after you have gained a lot of experience in one of the other classes.


Minimum Age: 17 years old.

Eligible engines: Any engine or combination of 2-stroke engines not exceeding 250cc.

MAW: 220kg

Chassis: International SuperKart chassis (Rule S3)

6” Dry and Wet tyres only. Dry tyres must have a 220 kilometres per hour minimum speed rating.

The tyre manufacturer’s minimum tyre pressure settings must be observed.

Rear wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks on the outside and three bead locks on the inside of each rim.

Front wheels must have a minimum of three bead locks fitted on the outside of the rim.

Fuel: Category 1 or 2 (Rule L4.1)
