About Us
Our Primary Focus
To provide an outrigger canoe community that encourages participation, competition and a healthy lifestyle in a supportive, safe and friendly environment.
TĀKITIMU OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUB was formed in February 2020 by a group of passionate paddlers whose dream was to offer a different outrigger canoe experience, by blending the traditions of the sport with the learnings and technologies of the modern day.
The club is blessed with coaches and paddlers that have represented their region and country.
Origins of Outrigging
Outrigging has been around for the last 30,000 years throughout the Pacific Rim. Our Polynesian ancestors used outrigging for migration and transportation purposes. In 1908, outrigging was established as a club sport in the Hawaiian Islands with canoe racing for men only following soon after. The first official waka ama club formed in New Zealand was "Mareikura Canoe Club", founded on the east coast by Matahi Whakataka-Brightwell in 1985 after he observed and was inspired by Va'a racing in Tahiti.
