About us

Manukau Taniwha BMX Club is a local community sports club that endeavors to encourage local residents, especially the young and young at heart, within our community to come and participate in this fun sport. We are dedicated to promoting and encouraging our activities at Colin Dale Park, Wiri.

Manukau Taniwha BMX Club (formally Papakura City BMX Club) has been an incorporated society for over 30 years. We are always looking for ways to help and encourage new and prospective members. We are able to supply bikes and safety gear for the first few times so that new riders can be introduced to the sport in a safe and friendly environment. Our club is run by volunteers. It has committed parents and riders that work very hard to keep our track and facilities in great shape. They also spend a lot of time developing and training our junior riders.

BMX is a action sport so protective gear is mandatory. A full-face helmet is required (we can hire these out) long sleeve top and long pants with closed toe shoes protect your skin, then full finger gloves protect your hands. These are the essentials. Elbow pads are recommended.

About BMX

BMX is the only cycling sport that provides an opportunity for young riders to participate in structured, skills-based training and competitions. The sport is a pathway to other cycling sports such as mountain biking, cyclo-cross and road racing. Many cyclists participate across a number of disciplines. Our sport is very social, and family orientated with riders ranging from as young as four to over sixty competing nationally.

The BMX season is from October to April. Most clubs run weekly Training Nights and Club Nights (racing) throughout the season. Weekend race meetings are hosted by different clubs around the country. At race meetings riders race others of a similar age and gender, over five races (motos).

National Championships are held near the end of the season, and for many families this provides a fabulous weekend of friendship and competition.
