Outdoor Target Shooting

Target shooting is one of a small number of sports open to almost anyone, irrespective of any disabilities, age, gender and fitness. Every person takes something different from the sport.

You can be as competitive as you like there is no obligation to enter competitions but if you like to compete, then you are graded so you are competing against shooters of the same ability as yourself.


The Rifle

Single shot .22 calibre shot Target Rifles are used. Sporting rifles using magazines are not permitted.


The Season

The Outdoor season runs from 1 October to 31 March



Shooting Disciplines

The sport of Outdoor Target Shooting is divided into two disciplines:

  • 50 meter rifle prone
  • 50 meter rifle three positions (3P)


50m Rifle Prone

Matches are 60 shots, and are over a period of 1 hour.

Outdoor shooters can participate at Club level only if they want to, shooting once a week, or can compete at events around NZ such as:

Championships matches, Designated Matches, Nationals, Oceania, Commonwealth Games


50m Rifle Three Positions (3P)

The 3P event involves shooting over 50m Outdoor from 3 distinct positions - standing, kneeling and prone.  3P is a Commonwealth and Olympic competition.
