CONCUSSION INFORMATION

With head injuries and concussion being a hot topic for our rugby community, we have provided a link to the BOP Rugby website where The Doctor’s Dr Morné du Plessis, has put together an article to assist in understanding concussion in sport. The BOP Rugby website has great advice for our rugby community and complements the RugbySmart programme undertaken by our coaches.  Click Here to follow the link.

The Blue Card Concussion Initiative (BCCI) is a new process being introduced to rugby at the community level across all Mitre 10 Cup provinces from the commencement of the 2017 season. The initiative is designed to improve player welfare in relation to brain injuries like head knocks and concussion. It is an extension of the existing Graduated Return To Play (GRTP) Stages, that has been in place for a number of years.

If, during any Junior match where a “BCCI Trained referee” is in control and the referee identifies a player suspected of suffering from a head knock or concussion, the referee will issue “A BLUE CARD” and the suspected injured player must leave the field immediately and will not be permitted to play for a minimum of 23 days (any player under 19 years).

Coaches and Managers are not permitted to play a player AT ANY TIME:

  1. Until after the mandatory 23 days minimum time frame AND
  2. Until that player has received medical clearance from a medical practitioner to return to play and has forwarded it to the BOPRU BCCI Administrator.
