TGS Rugby Weekly Newsletter 26.05.22

Kia ora everyone

A bit late with this week's update sorry.

Weekend recap:

Youth 16 had a big 83-19 win in a friendly game v Kristin. Unfortunately Kristin's numbers were deleted by Covid so some of our boys had to join in with them. Thank you and well done to the boys who did this as it's never easy playing in an opposition's jumper against your mates.

The 1st XV had another tough match against Rosmini. Rosmini took an early 12-0 lead in the twelfth minute and things were not looking good. Fortunately our boys woke up and replied with a low driving try from close to the line by Nikaiah Noble, which was converted by Heath Barrett, 12-7. Another try and conversion to Rosmini after 25 minutes took the score to 19-7, where it remained until half time. Early in the second half, Heath Barrett kicked a penalty to close the score to 19-10, but Rosmini replied with a try almost immediately; 24-10. Takapuna replied shortly after with a try to winger Luke Potter, which was again converted by Heath Barrett; 24-17. A try to Rosmini after 54 minutes took the score to 29-17. Late in the game, Toby Cotter crashed over, and Heath Barrett converted, to make it 29-24 with four minutes to go. So, despite all the errors we had a chance to take the game late, and put some good pressure on Rosmini, but were not able to get the job done. The boys will take a lot from this, the loss hurt them, because they knew that this was there for the taking. Players of the day for Saturday 3.Lyri; 2.Harry; 1.Taine.

The Navy rippa girls had a tough first 10 minutes to the game and a speedy Kumeu made the most of it taking a quick 4-0 lead! Then super sub Jess sprinted half the pitch to score our first try and we never looked back. The girls slowly tried to claw the tries back but still trailed 12-6 at half time. The second half saw the girls fighting back from the very first minute. More tries followed for Navy with great support for offloads. The commitment was immense seeing the girls throwing themselves onto the ball to regain control when the pressure led to Kumeu handling errors. Ultimately the fight back took so much out of the Navy girls with a final score at 19-13 but what a game. Some great positives to take away and importantly fantastic fighting spirit. MVP and Coaches POD Isla and Clara. Oppo POD Liv.

TGS Yellow played TGS Sky. It was great to play our first game at home and against familiar faces. With the help of a few other TGS girls we managed to get the numbers (thanks COVID), the game started off slow, with many girls bouncing back from various illnesses! It was a close game, with some great phases by both teams. Yellow was up at half-time, but Sky climbed ahead into the 2nd half, yellow dug deep and scored on the whistle for a 16-16 draw. Well done to Manaia for POD and all the girls for a great finish.

Youth 14 hosted Orewa College on the No.1 field - a big moment for most of the team playing their first game at TGS.  With a few last minute COVID cases on Saturday morning, our large squad of 25 was down to 17 for kick-off.  A decent crowd had gathered, including some vocal Youth 16 lads following their big win, and they weren't disappointed.  From the first kick-off,  the boys put on a superb display of rugby.  The forwards did a great job all day keeping possession, allowing quality ball for our strong ball runners to constantly attack and break the Orewa line of defence.  Orewa never gave up and got over our line for three tries, showing some cracks in our armour, but we ran away with another big win 60-17. Despite a game full of intensity from both sides, it was great to see the teams enjoy pizza together after the game.  Zach Bird,  Alex Clayton and Zack Fisher picked up the team gongs this week - great game, boys.

The Girls Youth 15 Tackle team had a challenging game last on Tuesday against Westlake girls, final score Westlake 41, TGS 25.  It is great to see the girls develop in confidence each time they get out on the field, this was for many of them only their second game of tackle rugby.  Stand out players were Manaia Watson, Ava Shaw and Holly Shipkov for their powerful running with the ball and defence.  Many of the girls that have come through with rippa rugby experience are showing a good skill base.

Weekend Draw:

You could spend your whole Saturday watching rugby if that is your thing. Our 1st XV will be hoping to get one up over Westlake at home at 12pm. Please come and support the boys as they deserve to get a big scalp. Once this is done head down to Vauxhall to watch the second half of the North Shore Colt's v ECB and then the Prems v Takapuna. It's great to see so many of our ex students (and former coaches and managers) involved in these teams.
