SPORTS ACADEMY PROGRAMMES  (Hockey, Football, Basketball)

Hockey Academy 2020

The Hockey Academy Program runs in term 1 and term 2. Students take part in a 2-day trial process at the very start of term 1. Up to 18 students are selected to be part of the programme. The Academy runs 2 sessions a week 7:30am on a Wednesday (school based session) and 7am on a Friday morning (skills focused at Park Island.) Students are provided with breakfast and transport back to school. As part of the academy students attend a 3-day camp at Pourerere beach. This programme is targeted at year 9 – 12 students. Students in year 13 are able to have a tailor-made programme to suit them. Target students for this are those wanting to play at a higher level and develop their hockey further. Following this all team trials will take place at the end of term 1.

The development of younger players is a must at Taradale High School. 2019 will see the inclusion of 4 competitive hockey teams attending National/North Island tournaments. With our mixed team and boy’s colts team being feeder teams for the first 11 boys and girl’s teams. Expert coaching across the board from Graeme Findlay, Rob Stephenson and Simon Nation (all representative coaches) and assistance from Greg Nicol (Previous national coach and national development manager) has seen hockey at Taradale High School steadily increase in success and numbers. We also have a number of social and lower grade teams. We aim to cater for all ability levels and provide a fun and enjoyable experience.

Football across abilities

We currently have 8 Football teams with an even split of girls and boys. Matt Bruin has been heading our junior program but has taken leave for 2019. This will see him replaced by Wilson McCullough (Representative goal keeper) with support from Chris McIvor (former national league player). Football continues to be a competitive sport at Taradale High school. We do however aim to cater for all ability players from Social through to Representative level.

Basketball Development

2018 saw a large increase in numbers and abilities playing basketball, with junior girls having teams in both division 1 and 2 and junior boys teams competing in both division 1 and 3. A focus is being placed on continuing the growth and development of basketball at Taradale High School. Students are now seeing basketball as an awesome opportunity to excel with a number of our players being named in Hawkes Bay teams. With this has also been a rise in social players who are simply playing for the love of the game. There is an extensive coaching staff on board at Taradale High School and the new appointment of Mariana Groot past representative player will see the sport continue to prosper.
