What is Fit4Football?
Fit4Football is a player welfare programme designed and run through NZ Football’s Player Welfare Team. There are nine principles that fall within the Fit4Football programme and there are opportunities for clubs to learn more about each by linking in with their local Player Welfare Officer (see the contact details at the bottom of the page).
What makes up the Fit4Football Player Welfare Programme?
When creating a holistic player focused environment it is important to consider all aspects that can help each player play to the best of their abilities.
Injury Prevention and Physical Conditioning – the 11+
Often when we think of injury prevention we don’t tie it in with performance enhancement but the two are inextricably linked. When players are injured less they are able to maximise their training, when teams have less injured players they have more players available to play at any one time. Performing the 11+ at least twice a week has been shown to not only reduce injury risk by up to 50%, but also to create faster, fitter, stronger and more agile players.

Developing Fundamental Movement Patterns – the 11+ KIDS
Many of our children are spending less of their free time outdoors, with limited ‘free play’ children are no longer developing the fundamental movement patterns important to live healthy, active lifestyles. Coupled with the ever increasing demand of sport at a young age we are starting to see young children with injuries we traditionally only ever saw in late teens/early adulthood.
The 11+ KIDS programme has taken the injury characteristics of children who play football and formulated a series of fun exercises that can help prevent them.

With similar match demands on referees to that of a player, it is important that referees look after themselves with regards to injury prevention. The 11+ referees has been designed with the specific movements of a referee in mind and has options for both Referee and Assistant Referee.
Everyone is responsible for identifying the signs and symptoms of concussion. If we are able to recognize and remove a player from the field as soon as an initial concussion has occurred, we can improve the health and welfare outcomes for that player. Poorly managed concussion can not only lead to further concussions, but serious long term health implications too.

The Female Athlete
One of our most popular workshops, learn the differences between female and male players and how they must be trained differently. The Female athlete workshop will go through female specific injury prevention, the menstrual cycle and how it influences training, as well as female specific nutrition considerations. The term ‘Player Welfare’ has been thrown around a lot recently but what does it actually mean? How can we create a holistic player welfare environment in our clubs by putting the theory into practice? Book in a workshop with one of your local Player Welfare Officer.
Nutrition plays an important role in the performance and recovery of teams. Often we get confusing and sometimes false messaging from social media about what is the right or wrong way to fuel for football. Our generic nutrition guidelines are based off the most recent, peer reviewed scientific papers. For the most current advice, book in a workshop with your local Player Welfare Officer.
The three main priorities of recovery are simple: good nutrition, hydration and sleep. Learn more about how getting the simple things correct can make a big difference to team performance, as well as how other modes of recovery may work, by booking in a recovery workshop with one of your local Player Welfare Officers.
