The RYDA Programme will take place on 15 February for our Year 12 students.
RYDA Programme - General Information
PROGRAMME – RYDA is a road safety education programme for senior high school students that is held at an out of school venue over one day. Students are divided into class-sized groups and moved through six workshops - five workshops occur in a class room environment and one workshop occurs on, and along the side of a section of roadway or within a carpark area. The RYDA Programme is inclusive and interactive; all students who attend are given the opportunity to participate. The RYDA Programme is provided by Road Safety Education Limited (RSE), coordinated locally with Rotary Clubs and delivered by RSE-trained facilitators. Programmes are organised by Programme Coordinators who are often also the Day Managers as well.
VENUE – The locations of all RYDA venues are listed on RSE's website (rse.org.nz/RYDA/Resources/Locations.aspx). There is a drop off zone for buses at each venue with a safe area for students to get on and off. Facilities include pedestrian access, meeting rooms, and toilets. For the practical demonstration area of vehicle stopping distances, venues have a closed roadway or carpark area up to about 250 metres in length which is observed by students set back behind road cones or barriers.
TEACHER SUPERVISION – Student discipline is the school's responsibility. School supervisors should maintain direct supervision of all students during their participation in the RYDA programme and should have a Person in Charge (PIC) at the event. Noting the school’s duty of care owed to students while on excursions, as it is in the school environment, this duty of care cannot be delegated. Schools should ensure that there is a sufficient number of school supervisors to escort the students to allow for supervision of each class/group and meal breaks as required by school and EOTC guidelines.
