A large gathering of club members, contractors, sponsors and other officials last Saturday witnessed the opening of the club’s new synthetic green.

Club President Mike Stewart welcomed all those who attended including Tasman District Councilors Trevor Norris, Brian Ensor, Stuart Bryant and Judene Edgar, Vince Roper from Bowls NZ, Colleen Kempton and Colin Aitken representing Bowls Nelson and members from other sister clubs from throughout the Nelson Centre.

The grateful thanks of the club was extended to the Tasman District Council for its very generous grant of $100,000 towards the cost of this $350,000 project, to the many club members for their donations and hours of voluntary labour, to the Pelorus and Network Tasman Trusts, to the two main contractors Dales (NZ) Ltd and Ching Contracting Ltd and to the numerous other local sub-contractors and suppliers many of whom had contributed goods and services to the value of many thousands of dollars free of charge.

Following the speeches Councilor Norris raised the club flag a symbolic gesture indicating the new facility was officially open and appropriately the first jack and bowl were delivered by two club stalwarts Ray and Di Spittal who had personally contributed by way of a substantial cash donation.
