Wanaka AFC

Player Development

Our long-term aim at Wanaka AFC is to continuously develop our footballers in an environment that is safe and secure, and at the same time challenging those players that want to develop by stretching them to further improve. In 2018 Wanaka AFC set up the skill centre, which focused on footballers between the ages of 7-11 years old, after which the Football Talent Centre continues this development for players aged 12-16. In addition we work closely with Southern United Academy. We recognise that the success of player development is a partnership between the player, parent and club coaches, with all parties playing an active role to support the player in achieving their goals. All players will be reviewed by the development coaches during the season and where a player stands out there will be opportunities for those players to move into development teams and the skill centre program. For those players that become part of the skill centre program and development teams there is a higher expectation, including:

  • Attending training during the week – which could include occasional twice weekly sessions
  • Available to play games on Sunday’s throughout the season, with the possibility of Rep Football in October

Always showing:

  • punctuality – being on-time and ready to start training
  • appropriate football training equipment – this means shin pads, football boots, and drink bottle
  • positive attitude – keen, focused and enthusiastic
  • good level of fitness
