Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival

Wellington College has a tradition of performing very well in the Sheilah Winn Shakespeare Festival. In 2010, 2011, 2017,2018, 2019 and 2020 performances made it to the finals and in 2010, 2011, 2012 2019 and 2020, Wellington College students were selected for the National Secondary Schools Shakespeare Week. In 2018 the excerpt from King Lear won the regional title and in 2019 Two Noble Kinsmen excerpt won. In 2019 a performance of Romeo and Juliet (the entire play in 5 minutes, in NZ Sign Language and with an original, live score) won a number of accolades. 2020 was a bumper year. The excerpt from Henry IV part 1, filmed in a car in the car park of Macdonalds, won 2 national awards and the 2 actors and the director were selected for NSSP week. George Parker and Josh Kemp Whimp were then selected for the Young Shakespeare Company, and all things being equal, will travel to London to The Globe Theatre in 2021.

Building on this success we will be entering a number of both student-and adult-directed excerpts from Shakespeare in the 2021 competition. WC has 6 pieces entered 5 student-led and 1 teacher-led this won entry into the National Finals where it received great feedback and a prize for best costume.
