Athletics

Welcome to Wellington College Athletics.

Athletics is one of the major summer sports at Wellington College. Many of our athletes compete regularly on a Saturday afternoon at Newtown Park. Athletes can compete either by joining a club or competing in their school singlet under the Wellington College banner. We offer coaching in all disciplines: Sprinting, Throwing, Jumping, Hurdles and Middle Distance. We also welcome athletes of all abilities and experience.

In addition to the NZSS Championships at the end of the year, there are also the North Island Championships and the Wellington Regionals. Many athletes also compete in the National Club Championships.

The major local focus is the McEvedy Shield Meet, where the College competes against St Pats Town, St Pats Silverstream, and Rongotai Colleges. 2024 saw McEvedy take place for the 101st time and Wellington College won for an unprecedented 9th year in a row.

TRAINING:

  • Sprints, Middle Distance and jumping: Three days after school at Newtown Park (Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 3.45pm – 5pm).

  • Throwing - Lunchtimes No. 3 Field, offered on selected lunchtimes.

NOTE REGISTRATIONS CLOSE: Friday 7th February 2025

SUMMER HOLIDAY TRAINING:

We will train Monday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 9:30am – 11:00ish beginning on Monday 16th December, through until Thursday 19th December. We will then re-start training on Thursday 9th January and continue until school starts. At that stage, training will be same days but after school. Training takes place at Newtown Park

Training will begin with either speed work for sprinters and jumpers or middle distance work for 800, 1500, 3000m runners. Throwers will work on technique and actual throws, or speed drills as there may not be a throws coach available all of the time.
