Competitive Basketball

Welcome to Wellington College Basketball.

Basketball has long been one of the most popular sports at Wellington College. 2024 was another big year for WC Basketball as our Senior A team came 4th in the National Secondary Schools Tournament, and came first the year before.  They also won the Prem grade again for the Pohlen Cup, the Senior B's won Division 1 and won the Bill Eldred Cup in the CSW competition.

All our teams competed well in the CSW competition where the players developed individually and as a team throughout the season to finish very well across the board.

Competitive Basketball | COLLEGE SPORT WELLINGTON (CSW) LEAGUE

Basketball is very competitive, selection for teams to compete in the College Sport Wellington (CSW) leagues is limited, as there are more boys wanting to play than there are teams available. We welcome parents who are keen to assist with coaching, managing, reffing teams or on the committee.  Please indicate on the registration form if you can volunteer your time in some way, the programme relies on your assistance to be successful!  We are keen to support more students to ref, please also indicate if you are interested on the registration form - a training course and support/mentoring is offered.

Boys who are not selected to compete in the CSW leagues can play in junior and senior social leagues offered here at school, we had over 200 players involved in this in 2025.

Please note that boys who are selected for the Senior A basketball team will have a regional (and national if qualify) tournament to attend.  There are travel/accommodation costs associated with this.  Senior A players may have additional costs (warm up gear, additional tournaments tbc).

Note: all sports tournament costs from the previous year must be paid before trialling this year.  The Senior A team compete in School traditionals through the year, details of these are here.

There are also opportunities for our Senior B and Junior A and B teams to compete in tournaments through the year, these will incur additional costs.

Trial dates 2026:

Seniors

  • Senior trials are following a different format this year - we will keep all registered players informed.  Please make sure you are registered by 25 Feb on the link above.

Juniors

  • Junior trial 1:  Sunday 8 March   4 - 6pm @ Akau Tangi Sports Centre (formerly ASB), 72 Kemp St, Kilbirnie

  • Junior trial 2* is a closed trial which you will be invited to attend.  It will be held on Sunday 15 March @ Akau Tangi Sports Centre

*Please note, the second trial for both Juniors and Seniors will be for athletes invited to attend following the first trial.  We need to manage numbers due to the anticipated amount of triallists and also court availability, however, we will ensure the trial process is transparent and allows for all athletes to be considered for selection appropriately.

It is important to attend  trials to gain the best exposure to the selectors.  If you are unable to attend a trial you must let us know at least 24 hours beforehand if not earlier.

  • After trials the selected squad players will break into 2 squads who will continue to train/trial over the next 3 weeks before the actual teams are announced.

  • Note, If you make it through trials to a squad, you are still not guaranteed into a competitive team until the final teams are announced.

Preseason runs and scrimmages are also running through the holidays for those keen to get some early practice.  Join the Wellington College Basketball facebook page for updates on this.

In 2026 Wellington College will have 4 Senior Teams and 4 Junior Teams.

We are always looking for parent volunteer coaches/manager and referees for all our games.  Please contact us if you would like to learn to ref or can help in any way.

Registration and Payment:

  • $150.00 to trial for a senior competitive team.

  • $150.00 to trial for junior competitive team, you are refunded fee if you don't make a team.

All new players both social and competitive will receive a WC basketball warm up top or basketball.
