The Jug 1999 Background

In 1999 Waikato Golf decided to change the format for the final of the Wills Cup. Margaret Johnston (sadly not with us anymore), Margaret Ranger and Merle Shaw (sadly not with us anymore) all members of the Association at that time, thought that only the winners from each Zone playing on the day was not very exciting.

So the decision was made by them to get another trophy to be played for by the runners up from each Zone. A silver jug was purchased and after a lot of discussion  it was decided to call it "The Jug".

It is not given to the runner up of the Wills Cup on Finals Day it is a separate competition as mentioned above..

Now the Finals Day is really interesting and enjoyed by all.

The 2023 Wills Cup/Jug Cup Competition was held on Friday, 4th August at the lovely Ngaruawahia Golf Club.  Our ladies arrived to a frosty start causing a 10 minute delay but the weather gods were shining down and the day morphed into something spectacular!  Our Wills Cup teams were lined up going off the 1st tee and the Jug teams off the 10th tee.  It was a solid day of golf for the combined team of Waiterimu/Morrinsville.  These ladies were on fire with a winning team score of 116!  Sharryn Hazelwood with 18 points, Eileen Bateup with 23 points, Jennie Brown with 18 points, Leanne McGergor 16 points, Jill Wilson 22 points and Gaye Johns finishing off the tally with 19 points!  This is the first time on the winners podium for this team!  Fantastic team effort.  Unfortunately for Ngahinepouri who missed out by 5 team points finishing with 111 points, Putaruru taking the 3rd spot with 106 points and finally Te Awamutu with 99 points on the day.  Congratulations and well done.

The Jug competition was won with a team score of 122 by the Tahuna ladies team.  Debbie Carney, a late replacement entry, took 21 points, Joanne Pritchard with 20 and Pam Haakma with the best scoring individual of the day with 25 points helped her team to secure the win by a substantial 8 points margin over Horsham Downs at 114 points. Jill Hows impressed with 22 points, Debbie van Lierop and Janice Kowalski both with 17 points for Tahuna.   Matamata finished in 3rd place with 108 points and PioPio Aria round with 86 team points.

Many thanks to the Peter Arndell, General Manager, and Ngaruawahia Golf Club for hosting this years event.  A big thank you to Gaylene Bunn, WGA Women's Vice President and Nicky Parker, the Women's Club Captain for all getting the course secured, setting up the competition and getting the scorecards ready!  Also, to the greens staff for preparing and presenting the course to the highest standards, to the caterers and the volunteers that helped put this event together.  We appreciate all of your hard work and efforts!

Again, congratulations to you all and we look forward to another exciting Will Cup/Jug Competittion in 2024.

Congratulations to Tahuna for winning the Wills Cup and to Waikare for their win in the Jug Competition. We had a great day at the Hamilton Golf Club with mild temperatures and no fog so we were able to tee off on time.  It was lovely to see so many out to support and to cadddy.  It made the day all the more special.

Thank you to Sarah and Steve in the proshop for having the event scheduled to perfection.  Another thanks to the Hamilton ladies who provided a lovely morning tea, a special thanks to Jean McDermid for coordinating and handing out scorecards!  Thank you to the greenkeeping staff for having the course looking and playing in top form!  Much appreciated.  Unfortunately, Peg Murphy was unable to attend but she passed on her best wishes to all those playing.

What a pleasure it was to be out at the Pirongia Golf Club and watch these ladies tee it up for the 2021 Wills Cup/Jug Competition.  This was our third attempt to get this competition played as mother nature showed us who was boss for our first attemp, Covid -19 for the second and finally our third time lucky and we were a green light.

The weather on the day was pleasant with partly cloudy skies and a mild breeze and by mid-day it was short sleeve conditions for most.  The course was looking amazing with Scott Law, their Head Superintendent, out there mowing the greens early and various volunteers out and about.  Thank you to those folks as well as the ladies for putting on morning tea, the bar person Jim, the catering staff for a lovely spread on offer and to Denise for doing the scorecards and results and l as Lynda for helping to coordinate the day.  We can't hold these events withouth you!  `

A special thank you to Peg Murphy for coming again out to present this years winners.

Congratulations to the 2021 Wills Cup Winners - Tahuna!  Tahuna the Jug winner from 2019 are surely the competition to beat for 2022!  Great golfing ladies.

Congratulation to the 2021 Jug Cup Winners - Ngahinepouri!  These ladies smashed the competition scoring a total of 133 points on the day.  You rocked the Pirongia Golf Course.  Well done and much deserved.

Thank you to all that participated in this years event, to the caddies and the supporters.  I hope to see you all back again next year so we can do it again.
