WNC has always supported the growth of young players and coaches through their representative program.  In previous years there has been a decline in the number of players in these age groups trialling for Year 7 & Year 8 Representative Teams & generally a decline in the number of young people participating in netball at our centre.  In 2017 WNC decided to develop a programme for ALL Year 7 & 8 players, focusing on developing the WHOLE player.

We take a holistic approach to the program & are guided by Sport New Zealand Physical Literacy guidelines & Dr Mason Duries’ Te Whare Tapa Wha model.  We want players & coaches to not only learn about the skills required for the game but also the behaviours that make for a well rounded netballer.

Supported by the Netball NZ Player Development Programme, NetballSmart and other resources a programme is put together to give the player the best experiences and learnings.

Players also have the opportunity to work with the Year 1 & 2 Juniors and assist the coaches with the Skill Development portion of their games as WNC Star Helpers.

The program is usually a full season programme and runs Monday evenings from May through to August and follows a basic periodisation plan.

Field Days
The program is also designed to give participants the opportunity to experience what representative netball ‘feels’ like.  ALL Yr 7 & 8 Development Players will attend the WNC Field Days Tournament, held annually on the first Sunday of August at Whangarei Netball Centre.  And depending on participants availability, there may be the opportunity to attend field days at other Northland Centres such as Kerikeri, Mangonui, Northern Wairoa or Bay of Islands.

Players will be supplied with a training tee to be worn to the tournament and training sessions.
