It is with great sadness that we acknowledge the passing of Kathy Baker, a treasured member of the Whangārei Netball Centre whānau.
Kathy was known by all for her warm smile, straight-up nature, and willingness to give her time wherever it was needed. She never waited to be asked — she was always the first to put her hand up, whether it was umpiring at any level, stepping in to support representative teams, or taking on “just one more” Saturday game.
She had a special gift for bringing joy to those around her. Festival days were her favourite, where she delighted in watching younger players and joined in the spirit of the day with her laughter and sense of fun. Kathy was respected across our community — by umpires, coaches, players and the wider community — not just for her umpiring ability, but for her generosity, encouragement, and the friendships she built. She was always ready for a chat or kind words of support for umpires who had faced a challenging game.
Kathy’s contribution to our netball community was immense, and she will be deeply missed. Our aroha and thoughts are with her whānau, friends, and all who were touched by her kindness and commitment.
