Welcome to the Zingari Club's official website
Where tradition meets sportsmanship and history unfolds.
About Us
Established in 1878 by a group of dedicated Naval Cadets, the Zingari Club has a rich and storied history in the heart of Dunedin, New Zealand. Originally, the club's home ground was located on the present site of Otago Boys High School. In 1887, a significant moment in our history occurred when the Zingari Club merged with the Richmond Club, giving birth to the institution we know today as the Zingari-Richmond Club. The newly formed club established its headquarters at the Oval.
The Origins of "Zingari"
The name "Zingari" itself carries a sense of mystique. It is derived from the Gipsy name and the club's colours are believed to represent a Gipsy myth:
Black: Symbolises emerging from darkness.
Red: Represents the journey through the fire.
Yellow: Signifies the arrival into the light.
The Die Hards Spirit
In 1887, Zingari earned its nickname "the Die Hards" due to the unwavering determination and never-say-die attitude of its members. This spirit has been a defining characteristic of the club throughout its history.
Montecillo: A Place of Significance
The club's history is closely intertwined with the land on which it stands. In 1888, Zingari moved to the Caledonian Ground before making another move in 1890, this time to Montecillo. The name "Montecillo" is a tribute to an estate in Portugal owned by the Reynolds family, who relocated to Dunedin in 1850. They purchased seven acres of land and named it Montecillo, which happens to be the area opposite our ground, where the Montecillo War Veterans Home once stood.
"Always the Game"
In 1932, the club adopted its motto, "Always the game," which reflects our enduring commitment to the spirit of sportsmanship and the love of the game.
The Junior Club
In 1956, the Zingari Club expanded its reach and influence when the junior club was established. This initiative was the brainchild of All-Black legend Norm Wilson and was brought to life by a dedicated fathers committee. It represents our commitment to nurturing young talent and passing on the values and traditions that have defined our club for over a century.
At the Zingari Club, we honour our heritage while embracing the future of sports and community involvement. Join us in celebrating the rich tapestry of history and camaraderie that continues to thrive within our club.
