SERVICE PROGRAMME

Service is an extremely important component of our Good Man programme designed to build outstanding character in our young men.

It does not always have to be about big issues; it can be acts of kindness, consideration and compassion in the classroom, around campus, on the sports field, at home or in the community allowing our boys to discover the best in themselves and to develop lifelong habits. The College has a number of service opportunities for all year groups at school and in the community. Many boys also volunteer their own time outside the College programme.  All these endeavours add to their understanding the purpose and end result of what it is to be a good man.

Hawke's Bay Women's Refuge Care Packs

In 2017, staff instigated a project among the boys to support Women's Refuge. This project has involved practical help in the form of garden maintenance and the provision of “care-packages” for the visitors to the refuges. The College currently provides about 250 care packs a year to women in the refuges and has fully restored the gardens of the Women's Refuge in Hastings.

This project has embodied Lindisfarne’s goal of educating boys to be better young men and is intended to create a better understanding of the importance of empathy, consideration and fairness in relationships and to therefore build a better community for everyone. 

The care packs are a gift designed to help women staying in the refuge feel better about themselves, to feel healthy and cared for. The packages contain essentials with the emphasis on whole body care. A few much-needed treats are also included. Each pack contains a minimum of 20 items, all donated by our Lindisfarne community: boys, parents and staff. Improving self-esteem is a vital part of the healing process, and based on all feedback received, the care packs have made a huge difference to the lives of their recipients.

Women's Refuge Garden Maintenance

​​​​​​​Another significant contribution has been transforming the gardens of the Hastings Women’s Refuge into a tranquil oasis where women can relax in peace and quiet. With the help of several staff members, and a few off-duty police, Lindisfarne boys have completed all the work needed and now that the gardens are in good shape, the boys maintain them regularly.

The garden improvement wouldn’t have been possible without some incredibly generous support from local companies and we would like to thank the following in particular:  Mitre 10 Mega, McDonalds, Hatuma Limeworks, Grocom, Flaxmere Pharmacy, Stephenson Transport and Ravensdown.

Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award Programme

The Duke of Edinburgh's International Award programme is aimed to equip young people for life.   The Duke of Edinburgh's Hillary Award scheme has seen a revival in recent years at the College with growing numbers of students registered at Bronze, Silver and Gold level. This year there has been an additional level added to the Duke of Edinburgh's scheme named the "Kakariki Journey" which is a "green level" you can achieve while doing other levels. This level is designed to give students an environmental focus on their Duke of Edinburgh Journey

In 2016, Old Boy Duncan Parsons was one of 2 selected to attend the Diamond Jubilee (Duke of Edinburgh) Gold Award presentation at Buckingham Palace in the presence of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, HRH Prince Edward and HRH Sophie Countess of Wessex.

We are proud that so many of our students have persevered to achieve the highest accolade, the Gold Award.

Trips Abroad - Nepal

Service and Personal Development 

This hugely popular service trip comes around every 3 years.  Limited to 24 boys the group travel to Nepal for around 21 days landing in Kathmandu then on to Lukla where they start their round-trip trek to Ama Dablam base camp in the Himalayan range east of Nepal.

The 2015 trip was overshadowed by the horrific earthquake that struck only 2 weeks after their return. This reinforced the service aspects of their trip and gave a much greater meaning to the opportunity the boys had been given as well as the relationships they developed with their guides and the people they helped. 

The most recent trip was in April 2018 and the next trip was meant to depart at the end of the first term, 2020.
