Cruising


Over the years our club members gathered a lot of useful information about our favouritecruising locations. As a result of this the Squadron has a good collection of cruising guidesand cruising stories.The cruising Guides and Logs are available as pdf files for OTYS members.

Abel Tasman National Park.Author unknown. First published 1984. A good detailed guide, containing plenty of practical advice.

Pelorous Sound.Authors Judith & Allan Hutton 1981. Written from the perspective of Noelex 22 sailors. Basically still relevant, but detail probably needs up-dating.

Lake Benmore.Authors Robyn & John Armstrong 1982. A detailed guide, with advice on both geography and weather, plus some tips on things to do.

Lake Dunstan.A compilation of notes by Martin Balch, ForresterDavidson and Alan Hughes 1994 about sailing conditions, and facilities on the new lake.1996 Up-date by Martin Balch and Forrester Davidson in the light of further sailing experiences on Lake Dunstan.More detail about available facilities.

A Trilogy of LakesHawea, Wanaka, WakatipuAuthors Keith Nelson and Bill Penrose 1991. Covers sailing conditions, launching places, anchorages and shelter, hazards, food supplies and things to do.

Cruising in Wanaka.Author Steve Garland 1990. The story of another cruise on the Lake

Lake WanakaAuthor David Strang (1986) The story of a cruise. (1994) More cruising detail about access points, wind conditions and hazards to whet your appetite to sail there.

Lakes Wakatipu, Wanaka and Hawea.  Boating Guides published by the Queenstown Lakes District Council in 1995/6 for these lakes are also held in our library. Updated versions are available from Q.L.D.C. when in the area.

Lake Te Anau.Author Kevin Brown et al 1992. Nearly everything you would like to know before cruising on this magnificent lake.Ivan Costain in 1987 wrote about cruising from Te Anau Downs to Glade House.

Lake ManapouriManapouri My Way. Ivan Costain 1989. The narrative of a four day cruise on Lake Manapouri in a 16ft. Cherry.

Stewart Island.Author Chris Bathurst (undated). A crossing from Bluff to Stewart Island in a Noelex 30, and details of an extensive cruise round the Island.Authors Ngaire & Neil Monk 1990. A personalised story of crossing Foveaux Strait, and a subsequent holiday around and on Stewart Island. Good tips on hunting and fishing.
