Christchurch Royals Softball Club was formed in the 1988/1989 season with the amalgamation of the Avonhead Softball Club and the Hornby Softball Club.

The name “Royals” and it club colours “royal blue, white and yellow” derived from the United States team, Kansas City Royal.  The name was negotiated by the clubs first President, Mr Colin Waho.  From the beginning, the club established a reputation for producing talented softballers of all ages, and the club continues to do so today.

Christchurch Royals Softball Club, or “Royals” as it is commonly known, has a regular membership base of 120-160 people, made up of players, coaches and managers.  This equates to 10 junior grade teams, including teeball, and 4 senior/social teams. Many parents and families actively support the playing members each weekend and training during the week.

Many Royals members have strong family connections to the club, with players being children or grandchildren of the original founders and players of the club.  The club also has strong community ties, with many of the members living in Hornby/Wigram/Yaldhurst and Rolleston area.

Christchurch Royals Softball Club celebrated it’s 20th anniversary at Easter 2009, and will celebrate its 21st birthday at Easter 2010.
