What Kind of Bike Should I Get?

When you are sure that your child is keen to continue with BMX racing, it is probably time to start looking for a race bike. This can be a daunting task as there are so many options out there, and to the untrained eye sometimes freestyle or street/park style BMX bikes can look similar to a race bike, but will not perform anywhere near as well.

Many people look to online auctions for a bargain. Please make sure you get some advice from someone in the club before you buy online as the wrong bike can really set a rider back. Please note that at under no circumstances are bikes with foot pegs attached to be used for racing. These are very dangerous to other riders on the track, and can cause accidents.

Bike Sizing:

Club members are more than happy to let people try out bikes to get an idea of sizing. BMX race bikes can hold their value reasonably well and you may end up paying a lot for a well used second hand bike.

Bike sizes and dimensions vary between manufacturers but these guidelines can be used as a rough guide.

Micro Mini - The smallest race bike frame available, these have a 20 Inch Wheel Diameter but will sometimes have an 18 inch wheel diameter. Not all manufacturers make a micro mini.  Generally these are used for children aged 5 or under who are shorter than 120cm.

20 Inch Wheel Diameter:

Mini -  Best suited for children between 115 and 135cm tall

Junior - Best suited for children 130cm - 145cm tall

Expert - Best suited for children 140cm to 160cm tall

Pro - Best suited for riders 155cm to 175cm tall

Pro XL or above - For larger adult riders, or those who prefer a longer frame

Cruiser - Crusiers have a 24 Inch wheel diameter and are generally available in Junior, Expert and Pro sizes. Riders choose between 20 inch and Cruisers from personal preference. Cruisers and 20 inch are raced in separate classes for specific events, but usually for club nights cruisers and 20 inch bikes will line up together.

Crank Sizing:

BMXUltra have a great little tool as a guide to crank lenths (as well as Bike sizing). As always these are a rough guide only.
