Kapiti Wanderers:- Guidelines

General:

The Kapiti Wanderers is an informal walking group who walk together every second Tuesday.  The Tuesday we walk is the non-National Superannuation Payment Day (this day is noted on many calendars).  Those who belong to the BikeKapiti50plus group will know that they cycle on the superannuation payment day and the Kapiti Wanderers walk on the alternate Tuesdays.

There will be no walking schedule as such but the ‘designated leader’ for the walk will sort out something beforehand.  Walks will start by catching either the 9:00am unit from Waikanae (the 9:07am from Paraparaumu) or the 9:20am unit from Waikanae (9:26am from Paraparaumu).  We will catch the earlier unit when we travel into Wellington, otherwise we will usually go to a station between Pukerua Bay and Takapu Road – an indication of the walk, and which train to catch, will be given by email some days beforehand. Email [email protected] in order to get onto the email list.  So that walkers can find each other, we have agreed to board the second carriage.

Safety:

The walks will normally last for about two hours.  An indication of the difficulty of the walk will be given in the email. All walkers are expected to take responsibility for their own safety and to carry with them water, refreshments and any necessary emergency medications or first aid supplies.

Leaders:

At the end of each walk someone will be designated as ‘leader’ for the next walk.  Although we will normally walk ‘as a group’ participants will be free to choose how far they walk or when they decide to catch a train back.  You MUST let someone know if you drop off early or deviate from the agreed walk.

Walking on Roads:

When walking on roads, where provided, footpaths are to be used.  Where there is no footpath walkers are to stay on the right-hand side of the road to face oncoming traffic, except around blind corners where the outside shoulder of the road may be used.

Emergency Communication:

We will ensure that some have cell-phones, so that communication can be maintained within the group and outside help contacted should an emergency arise.

Car Pooling:

As parking is limited at the Waikanae and Paraparaumu stations we encourage walkers to use public transport to the station, otherwise we encourage car-pooling – please make your own arrangements with other walkers.
